Back in October I did a contest based on a prompt. I didn’t win the contest but I did enjoy writing the story and I got to know some pretty cool writers out of it. Today I am sharing the story I wrote.  The story remains untitled.

They took his wife and children. The children were slaughtered, and they made her one of them. He tried to kill her several times. The first time he was caught by surprise. He couldn’t bring himself to do it after he looked in her eyes; he knew that he still loved her. She was able to escape then.

The second time he had her within range. She vanished into a fog, a trick he had not seen before. Every time she was stronger and stronger. He learned that the local vampires made her their queen; he apparently killed the last one.
He had killed so many he had lost count, but he knew had to slay one more. He grabbed his axe and stepped out of his car. Sleet pinging against dark glass behind him, wind whipped leaves stampeding past his feet on the unlit path, an eerie howl screaming through the treetops; he knew he had trespassed against all reason and common sense, yet he walked further, bent against the storm, forward to meet his nightmare face-to-face.
She floated before him, as beautiful as the day they took her. He was older, his body beaten but not broken. She spoke.
“Come lover; see what I have done for us.”
“I want no part of your existence. Tonight one of us will die.”

“I have made our family whole again.” She waved her arm and there they were, his children. She had found their graves and had stitched their rotted corpses back together.
She had tried these types of tricks before and this time he would not be fooled.
“You animal, you will fall like the rest of your heathen kind! You should have left them buried; you should have let them sleep in peace.” Without hesitation he removed the children’s heads, and kicked their lifeless corpses back into the graves from which they came.
“My babies!” came the screech from above. He turned to block the attack, but she was quicker and he now had fresh claw marks across his face.
“They are not your babies anymore. They died a long time ago, just like you should have.” The blood was pouring from his cheek as she licked the flesh from underneath her nails. He started his attack. He took her arm as she gave him several gouges. He let loose a stream of brilliant flashes with his axe and removed some more parts from her body. In his final swing she vanished in a wisp of white smoke. From behind he felt her teeth. She found his shoulder and started to drink. As his life drained, he laughed. He held her back and smiled, pulled the pins from the grenades strapped to his body and said, “I love you, but this must end.”

There was blast of fire and ultraviolet light, a special design that he had created. There was nothing left in its wake, only peace and quiet, which was all he really wanted anyway.

Now that I've insulted you, tell me how you really feel...
